Sport at Redwood

Where champions learn their craft — and their character

At Redwood Science Academy, sport is woven into the rhythm of every school day. Whether a pupil aspires to represent the nation or simply wishes to stay active and enjoy honest competition, our programme offers the coaching, the facilities and the competitive calendar to help them flourish.

We believe that the lessons learned on the pitch, in the pool and on the athletics track — how to lose graciously, lead under pressure, support a team-mate and find reserves of quiet determination — are among the most formative of a young person's education. With more than twenty sporting disciplines on offer, every Redwood pupil discovers at least one arena in which they can genuinely excel and, in doing so, discover something essential about themselves.

Our Programmes

Six pillars of sport and physical education

Team Sports

Cricket, football, rugby, netball and basketball are each coached at performance and development levels. Our inter-school fixture list runs year-round, giving pupils regular competitive experience against peer institutions across the region.

Aquatics

Our heated 25-metre pool operates seven days a week. Squads train under ASA-qualified coaches, and water polo is offered alongside structured swimming squads at every ability level. Recreational sessions remain open to all boarders throughout the term.

Racquet Sports

Eight all-weather tennis courts, three squash courts and a dedicated badminton hall give our racquet sports programme genuine year-round reach. Coaching runs from absolute beginner through to county squad standard, with regular team fixtures and individual tournaments.

Athletics

A full eight-lane synthetic track hosts inter-house and inter-school competitions from September through to June. Field disciplines, cross-country running across our thirteen-acre grounds and a road-running club round out a rich and varied athletics calendar throughout the academic year.

Fitness & Wellbeing

Our state-of-the-art fitness suite, yoga studio and mindfulness sessions support a rigorous and growing science of pupil wellbeing. Health education is woven throughout our physical education curriculum from Year 7, equipping pupils with the knowledge to make healthy choices for life.

Outdoor Education

Kayaking, rock climbing, orienteering and a Duke of Edinburgh's Award programme take pupils well beyond the campus boundary. Expeditions operate at Bronze, Silver and Gold award levels each academic year, building resilience, self-reliance and a genuine love of the natural world.

Facilities & Coaching

Infrastructure that enables genuine ambition

Our sports complex — completed in 2022 following a major capital investment — brings together an indoor sports hall, climbing wall, spinning studio and performance gym under one roof. Floodlit artificial pitches extend the playing day well into the winter months, whilst our purpose-built cricket pavilion and prepared square are the envy of visiting schools throughout the county.

Coaching is delivered exclusively by qualified professionals, many of whom hold county or national coaching awards. Several of our coaches are former professional athletes who bring both technical precision and genuine personal insight to every session. We also maintain formal partnerships with regional academies in cricket, football and swimming, providing the highest level of specialist development to our most talented sportspeople.
